Bicycle advocates say tolling drivers coming into Austin could help reduce traffic | WOAI

Tolling drivers to get into Downtown Austin is one idea bicycle advocates say could help traffic in the future.

The city of Austin is in its public comment period for its Austin Strategic Mobility Plan (ASMP). As the city plans for the future of transportation, the Bicycle Advisory Council detailed a list of ideas they say could help bicyclists.

On the bottom of a long list was this line, “Implement congestion pricing to enter downtown area, utilizing funds for active transportation and transit.”

Tolling drivers to get into cities is not a new concept said bicycle advocate Nils Brown. “There are essentially tolls on specific points going into the city,” Brown said describing the city of Stockholm, Sweden.
