Car rental companies charge Brits more as consumer groups slam rip-off | Express

It’s been revealed that top car rental companies are charging Brits more than other nationalities for car hire.

A shocking investigation by The Daily Mail, Mail Online and consumer group A Spokesman Said found that both Avis and Europcar are charging different rates based on nationality.

Nic McBride from A Spokesman Said blasted the disparity as “an absolute rip off”.

He said: “Why should someone’s country determine the price they pay for the same exact product?”

British tourists hiring an Audi A3 in Mallorca between April 25 and 1 September could expect to pay £206.

But Spanish locals will pay £175 and American tourists just £134.

It costs a UK national £492 to hire a Nissan Micra from Chania airport, Crete, between August 4 and 11.

But an American will only pay £392 and a Frenchman £478.

Different prices also exist outside of Europe.

A British visitor to New Zealand is charged £124 by Europcar to hire a Holden Spark for five days, but Australians, Afghans and Indians only pay £95.

But German nationals are charged even more and pay up to £125 for the same deal.

It costs a Brit £150 to hire a Toyota Yaris in New Zealand, while Afghan and German customers are charged £98.
