YOU WOULD NOT purchase an airplane ticket, a new house or a new car without knowing beforehand what you will pay.

But too often we willingly accede to medical treatments without benefit of a similar accounting from our doctors and hospitals.

President Donald Trump raised hackles in the hospital and health insurance industries last month when he signed an executive order demanding hospitals tell patients what they will pay for a procedure up front — and what they charge insurance companies for the same job.

Trump argued such pricing transparency affords consumers the chance to shop around for medical services, which could generate competition and drive down medical costs. He has similarly tried to force pharmaceutical companies to list the price for all those new drugs they advertise relentlessly on TV.
