Letter: Make drug pricing transparent for Ohioans | The Columbus Dispatch

I respond to the Oct. 10 Dispatch editorial “Medicaid in need of transparency and oversight” regarding drug pricing. As a former administrator in Ohio’s Medicaid office, I was privy to meetings with both the pharmacy staff and pharmacy companies. Frequently I saw staff members agree with basically whatever the companies wanted. As a taxpayer and consumer, I was quite disturbed by the ease by which companies set the rules and prices.

Now we have pharmacy benefit managers who are middlemen ostensibly to save money by negotiating prices, but it appears that we now have an extra layer of smoke obscuring the prices we as taxpayers pay for Medicaid drugs. We need sunshine and transparency.
