Listing ‘suggested prices’ of health care could hurt patients | register-herald.com

Dr. Ira Nash, senior vice president and executive director of Northwell Health Physician Partners in New York, told NBC that almost nobody pays the charges that are indicated on the price list.

The real prices are the result of negotiations with insurance companies and those are not published, he added. Each patient’s copays, coinsurance and deductibles will impact the price that the patient pays.

Raleigh General posts a caveat with a link to its costs list, advising patients that prices are estimated and that the best way to find the cost of the procedure is to speak with their insurance providers and hospital staff.

“The amount listed is not necessarily reflective of your actual financial responsibility,” the Raleigh General site reads. “The amount collected by our hospital can be less than the amount on this list for a number of reasons, including discounts negotiated with third party payers like Medicare, Medicaid and commercial insurance companies, as well as patient-specific discounts based upon financial need and other considerations.”
