Tonko said all dairy producers have a common concern.

“They want to get a fair price for the product they bring to market,” he said. “They’re a critical small business to upstate New York. They have a tough job. At the federal level we can help with the pricing and making sure the labor force is effective. That’s where immigration reform is very critical.”

The caucus has eight co-chairs including U.S. Rep. Tom Reed, R-NY, whose district encompasses the Southern Tier, and U.S. Rep. Peter Welch, D-Vt., who represents the entire Green Mountain State,

Welch spokesman Ryan Nickel agreed with Tonko that milk pricing and immigration reform are two of the industry’s most important issues this year.

“Milk prices and production prices are down after near historic highs in 2014,” he said. “There’s an excess of milk in the Northeast and some farmers have had to dump milk. Prices for this year are projected to be down in the $16-17-per-hundredweight range compared to about $24 last year.”
