Netflix, streaming services don’t diminish Australian cinemas | Brisbane Times

It was a strong result considering discounting and dynamic pricing – different rates at different times – cut the average ticket price from $14.13 to $13.86.

Last month, box office takings had been running 6 per cent up on the previous year but they trailed off without a Star Wars movie over Christmas for the first time in three years, stopping the annual total short of the 2016 record of $1.259 billion.

The association chairman and chief executive of Roadshow Films, Joel Pearlman, described it as an “incredibly strong year” which showed the popularity of cinema-going despite increasing competition from streaming services.

“Some superhero films were great performers but it was wonderful to see a lot of diversity as well – family films and, of course, the juggernaut of Bohemian Rhapsody.”
