‘Price to Beat’ Could Be a Game Changer for Business Travelers | NerdWallet

If you’re a business traveler whose employer uses Rocketrip, and even if you’re not, take note: A new service that kicks back savings from travel bookings into employees’ pockets could soon change how you travel.

The company, whose clients include Twitter, ServiceNow and Feld Entertainment, recently announced a new service called Price to Beat. Its reach is limited now, but if the idea catches on, it could be a game changer.

How it works
The service works like this: The traveler logs on to the online booking tool through her employer’s account with Rocketrip. She searches for a flight, hotel, car or another travel service. Displayed on screen is a “Price to Beat” — a target price determined by the software. If the traveler books a trip below the cost, she splits the savings 50-50 with her employer.

How it saves you — and your employer — money
The service poses some interesting opportunities for the traveler that, in turn, can save money for her employer.

Would you fly coach instead of business class if half the difference went into your own pocket? Would you stay at a Holiday Inn instead of a Westin if you got some of the savings? Would you get behind the wheel of an economy rental car instead of a luxury SUV if doing so helped you make your own car payment?

Of course, the savings opportunities hinge directly on that computer-generated “price to beat.”

The algorithm could prove generous at times, with prices based on swanky hotels and business-class seats. Or it could set the savings bar unrealistically high, with bargain basement rates being the ones the traveler must “beat.” But if the idea catches on, it could be a good thing for both business travelers and their employers.
