Why do airfares from El Paso to other Texas cities cost more? | KFOX

El Paso, Texas — A KFOX14 viewer asked me this question: “Why does Southwest Airlines charge less to some out of state destinations that are farther away than to destinations within the state of Texas?”

On Southwest Airlines’ website, I found plane tickets to San Diego for as little as $49, and to Los Angeles for $92. Both destinations are more than 700 miles from El Paso.

But the cheapest Southwest airfares for in-state flights to Austin and Dallas, each about 600 miles away, went for $122 and $133 respectively, substantially more than the cost of the California flights.
